PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers University men’s basketball team defeated Georgetown University by a score of 71-60 in a Gavitt Game Showdown on Wednesday night. The Scarlet Knights extended their winning streak to three games in the new season and improved their record to 3-1, while Georgetown fell to 1-2.
Derek Simpson scored 15 of Rutgers’ points, while Gavin Griffiths and Aundre Hyatt each scored 12. Noah Fernandez scored 10 points in the second half. Jermichael Davis scored a season-high nine points for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers took control early in the game, going on a 9-3 scoring run and holding Georgetown scoreless for more than four minutes. The Red Knights led 30-18 with 7:35 left in the first half. The Hoyas managed to cut into the Rutgers lead before halftime, but the Scarlet Knights still led 38-32 at the intermission.
The Scarlet Knights exploded in the second half, opening the game with an 18-4 spurt, including 11 straight points, to extend their lead to 18 points, 54-36, at the 16-minute media timeout. Rutgers continued its hot shooting streak in the first 10 minutes of the second half, shooting 64 percent from the field to further widen the gap.
Georgetown struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the second half, hitting just 6-of-20 shots from the field, including just 1-of-10 from three-point range. This allowed Rutgers to maintain control and close out the game with a comfortable 11-point lead.
