Southglenn downs Gators at TIO Stadium

Motivated by Matthew Dennis, Southglenn defeated the St. Mary’s Gators by 109 points at TIO Stadium on Saturday.

The Gators were tied with Area in the first quarter, but the home team came out swinging in the second quarter and outscored them 18-2 the rest of the way.

Matthew Mazzini was outstanding on the defensive end, Jake McQueen was a threat up front and Jed Anderson dominated in the midfield.

Former Geelong and Brisbane forward Nakia Cockatoo made her surprise debut for the Regionals, adding to an already strong forward line.

Anderson, a former Hawthorn and North Melbourne Utilities player, scored three goals and a beautiful goal from the penalty line.

District coach Shannon Rusca was pleased with his team’s slow start to the season. He said the team has started to gel and is starting to play team soccer.

St. Mary’s beats Rangers in Sunday showdown

St. Mary’s made it three wins out of three with a big 78-point win over the Rangers on Sunday at TIO Stadium.

The Green Machine held an 18.21 (129 points) to 8.3 (51 points) advantage.

First-year rookie Seth Harris was a standout in the midfield, Jackson Calder scored seven goals from his forward position and Sam Glover was a valuable player.

Coach Anthony Vallejo described the team’s performance as “skillful” and said the team is already preparing for another final.

Buffaloes win thriller over Palmerston on Friday night

The Darwin Buffaloes made it three wins in a row with a hard-fought 32-point victory over Palmerston at Cazaly’s Arena on Friday night.

The teams were tied at halftime, but the Buffaloes sealed the win nine-four in the second half.

Cameron Stokes’ side were boosted by the return of former St Nick Yarran and former Brisbane Lion Mitch Robinson. Yarran kicked four goals and Robinson was influential in the midfield.

Hassan Ahmet Watkins continued his excellent form with six goals, while Daniel Stafford was one of the few players in the Palmerston backline.

Palmerston had a couple of outstanding players with junior forward Lucas Edmonds scoring four goals and Larkman Matthew Gooker playing well.

Nettlecliffe defeats Tivy Bombers

Nightcliff defeated the Tiwi Bombers by 66 runs in a twilight showdown at TIO Stadium.

The Tigers moved to the top of the MPL table with 18.12 (120 points) to 7.12 (54 points).

Brett Kennedy and Michael Mummery each scored four goals and Brodie Ferro was outstanding in the midfield. Senior defender Nathan Brown also played well on defense.

The Tivians showed the same form they did in last week’s win over Palmerston, but they struggled to contain Nettlecliffe’s forward line.

Head Coach Leigh Crossman said that despite the team’s comfortable win, there was still room for improvement.
