The Los Angeles Lakers recently announced the successful signing of forward/center Christian Wood, which was announced by Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager.

Christian Wood most recently played for the Dallas Mavericks during the 2022-23 season, making 67 appearances (17 starts) and averaging 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 caps in 25.9 minutes per game, while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range. Last season, he scored in double-figures in 12 of 54 games, including 25 games in which he scored 20 or more points. Wood also blocked at least one shot in 42 games last season, with multiple blocks in 17 of those games and even a season-high five blocks in two games.

Wood, 27, has played seven seasons in the NBA with Dallas, Houston (2020-22), Detroit (2019-20), New Orleans (2018-19), Milwaukee (2018-19), Charlotte (2016-17) and Philadelphia (2015-16). He has totaled 289 career appearances (139 starts), averaging 14.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 24.2 minutes per game, while shooting 51.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from three-point range.

In college, Wood played two seasons (2013-15) at UNLV, totaling 63 appearances (34 starts) and averaging 10.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 caps in 23.3 minutes per game.

Christian Wood tweeted on social media that it has always been his dream to be a player for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Christian Wood signs 2-year contract with the Lakers

The Lakers made it to the Western Conference Finals last season with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and Wood is the fifth veteran they have acquired this summer. In addition, the Lakers signed players like Jaxon Hayes, Taurian Prince, Gabe Vincent and Cam Reddish, while retaining free agents D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reeves and Rui Hachimura.

The Lakers lacked a replacement at center after Mo Bamba’s injury last season, and the arrivals of Wood and Hayes should allow Davis to be less physical at center.
