Liverpool’s new signing Endo responds to transfer criticism

Wataru Endo has responded to criticism of his summer transfer to Liverpool, saying that he understands the surprise that came with the move but is ultimately unconcerned.

The Japan captain played superbly against Toulouse in Thursday’s 5-1 Europa League win, even scoring his first goal with a well-placed header to retake the lead before half-time.

Endo was not Liverpool’s first choice target in the summer, as they had previously pursued Southampton’s Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo before both deals fell through. However, the 30-year-old is unfazed by this, saying that he is focused on performing for his new club.

“I know that Liverpool wanted others before me,” Endo said in a post-match interview. “But I’m not here to prove anyone wrong. I’m here to do my best for this club and help us win trophies.”

Endo’s performance against Toulouse was a promising start to his Liverpool career. He looked comfortable in possession and showed his versatility by playing in both central midfield and defensive midfield roles.

Whether Endo can become a regular starter for Liverpool remains to be seen, but he has certainly shown that he is capable of performing at a high level.
